Post-16 Foundation Learning Year

Post-16 Foundation Learning Year

The motivation behind The Levels School is to provide high quality, inclusive education for individuals who have been adversely affected by their dyslexia and other co-occurring difficulties. We can also support young people who suffer from low self-esteem and accompanying anxiety.

The Levels School Post 16 Foundation Learning Year has 3 areas of focus: Personal Development, Life Skills and Preparation for College. This transition year enables students to develop the skills needed to feel confident and excited about starting college and accessing their chosen course. Some young people do not feel ready to enter a mainstream post 16 environment at the end of year 11 and benefit from a tailored curriculum to support them with this transition.

Academically, we will also support students to achieve the qualifications needed to access their college course (A-Levels, Vocational Courses at Level 2 or 3, T-Levels or Apprenticeship). This support may include following the maths and/or English Functional Skills courses. Students working on Functional Skills will have the opportunity to work at their own pace and level. Face to face lessons with subject specialists are timetabled, with other sessions available for personal study in these subjects.  All students in Post 16 will also work towards a Functional Skills award in Digital Skills.

On site speech and language and occupational therapy is available for students who need support in these areas. This is timetabled on an individual basis. Students will also have twice weekly sessions of ‘Interpersonal Skills’ with a therapist.

Whilst with us, students will have the opportunity to gain ASDAN certificates linked to our focus on personal development and life skills. These certificates (in hard or digital form) can create a Record of Achievement which can be shown to colleges or employers.

Individualised programmes of study will support learners to develop high self-esteem, confidence, and the qualifications needed to access further education. This may include completing Life Skills certificates, mentoring younger students, taking part in community or enrichment activities, visiting local colleges and work experience.
